Breville Smart 4-Slice Waffle Maker Review
From snack makers to toasters, ovens and slow cookers to waffle makers, Breville has you covered.
Let’s talk about this top rated waffle iron that has received raving reviews on Amazon.
Here are the technical details in a nutshell:
weight: 14.3 lbs
size: 15.8″ x 8.8″ x 18.5″
So yes, this waffle iron is heavy, bulky and needs some counter space. No doubt about it.But it is a well-made, high-quality product with some impressive features.
At the same time, it is a well-made, high-quality product with some impressive features.
The Breville has a knob with five power settings, an easy-to-read display that shows the countdown timer plus different waffle options. You can choose from Belgian, Classic, Chocolate, Buttermilk and Custom waffle.
There is also a knob for you to choose the browning settings from light to dark as well as a ‘reset’ button and ‘a bit more’ button.
The ‘a bit more’ button is for people who like their waffles a certain way. Say, for instance, you set the waffle maker to ‘dark’, but the waffle is not quite the way you want it … that’s when this button comes into play.
Breville has invented the genius Waffle IQ Technology: what it means is that the waffle iron automatically calculates the cooking time to suit the chosen waffle style and color of the waffle.
The waffle maker also tells you when it is preheated enough, ready to put the batter in and an audible alert that signals when the waffle is cooked.
Waffle lovers will appreciate the generous size of the waffles: 4″ x 4″ and 1″ thick. Another important factor is that there are no preheating times between taking the cooked waffle out and pouring the batter for the next waffle in. In other words, you can cook one waffle after the other with no waiting time.

We also like the fact that the nonstick surface is not Teflon. Instead, the cooking plates are coated with cast aluminum.

Breville also addressed a big issue most waffle lovers have to face: the mess a waffle maker can produce.
The solution is the wrap around ‘moat’ that catches (and bakes) any overflowing batter.
What we do love about the ‘moat’ most is that the batter comes off so easily and doesn’t even reaches the parts of the waffle iron which can be hard to clean.
Speaking of cleaning; it is a breeze. No sticking batter, no scraping; just a wipe with a damp cloth will do the trick. If there is a bit of batter stuck I simply use an ear swab. That’s it!
Let’s Have A Look At The Pros Of The Breville Smart Waffle Maker
- Has an audible alert plus a countdown timer
- 12 different heat settings
- Very easy to clean
- Waffles are cooked consistently with even browning
- No need for seasoning the plates
- Four recipes are included
- Easy storage with a lockable lid; can be stored upright
- One-year limited warranty
Are There Any Cons
- Needs counter space
- Plates are not removable (we are a bit picky here)
- It is pricey compared to other waffle irons
For lovers of Belgian Waffles, the Breville Smart Waffle Maker should be on top of your list. Even though it is expensive, the unique features it has to offer are worth the price tag.
Ultimately it is up to you how much money you want to spend on a waffle iron. If you only make waffles once or twice a month than I would look at more affordable options.

But if you are a waffle enthusiast, the Breville Smart Waffle Maker is one of the best and will last for a long time.
My favorite features are the overflow ‘moat,’ the countdown timer and the cast aluminum nonstick cooking surface.
Besides Belgian Waffles, this waffle machine cooks savory, gluten-free or cheesy waffles and nothing will stick.
Well done Breville!
Bonus – Our Favorite Waffle Maker Recipe
As a bonus, we would like to share one of our favorite waffle recipes. You could also use a pre-made mix but we think fresh is best.
Most of the ingredients will be in your pantry and it is so much fun mixing it together and maybe even get your kids involved.
makes 8 waffles
- 2 cups self-raising flour
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 cups buttermilk
- a pinch of salt
- 2 eggs
- 100 g melted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- Mix dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl.
- Put the buttermilk, eggs, vanilla and melted butter into another bowl and whisk.
- Slowly pour the buttermilk mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. The mixture will be a bit lumpy. Be careful not to overmix the batter.
- Let the batter rest for a while.
- In the meantime preheat the waffle maker and set your desired browning and setting number four for the buttermilk waffles.
- Pour the batter evenly on the waffle plates and close the lid.
- Wait for the audible alert and carefully remove the waffle.
- Tip: if the batter gets a bit too thick, just add a bit more buttermilk.
Serve the waffle with your favorite toppings. We love it with whipped cream, maple syrup, and fresh fruit. Delicious!
