I can’t imagine having an Indian curry without homemade garlic naan bread. And today I am going to share with you my softest garlic naan bread recipe that I make in my much-loved cast iron pan.
But to be honest, you shouldn’t wait for your next curry dish to make this delicious and aromatic naan bread. My family enjoys this side dish with pumpkin soup, a simple pasta dish, or just on its own.
My special ingredient to make my garlic naan bread so soft and simply irresistible is – yogurt. It not only adds more flavor but also gives the naan bread a great chewy texture.
A little bit of patience and some kneading work is required, but not too much. I knead the dough for around 2 to 3 minutes until the dough feels smooth and elastic.
You need to be a bit patient for the dough to prove because of the yeast. The dough also needs to rest after you have shaped it into small balls.
If you want to have a look at how to do it, you can watch my video here.

My favorite part of the naan bread is, without a doubt, the aromatic topping which consists of finely grated garlic, chopped coriander, salt, and butter.
In my opinion, to achieve the best cooking results for my garlic naan bread recipe I recommend cooking the naan in a cast iron griddle.
I use an oval cast iron griddle which has the perfect shape. Here is a link to Amazon in case you need one.
A cast iron griddle has so many advantages; you don’t need to add any oil to fry the naan bread. Secondly, the griddle retains the heat perfectly and therefore cooks the bread evenly.
Last but not least you will get the nice charcoal effect that makes naan bread so delicious,

- Once the dough is ready, tip it onto a floured work bench and form it into a long roll.

How to make the Naan bread
- After the resting time, roll each dough ball out into a thin oval shape (the size of your cast iron griddle). It is best to do it with a rolling pin.
- Heat up the griddle (no oil needed) and fry the Naan bread one at a time. Check after around 2 minutes if the dough starts to brown. Flip it over and cook on the other side. Press the dough down either with a fork or a spatula while you're cooking the bread. Note: cook on medium heat
- Once the bread is cooked, take it out of the griddle and spread the topping on. Wrap the bread in tin foil to keep it warm.
- Proceed with the rest of the dough balls until finished.
